Re: planting preparation

Bob,
If you burn you will kill (or top-kill) the weeds that have started growing
this spring. This will advance your friend's site preparation without
having to use any herbicide. Burning will also remove the thatch so that
when your friend sprays he'll be able to use less herbicide because the
weeds will be exposed, rather than partially covered by thatch. Lastly,
burning will also allow sunlight to reach the soil surface which will
trigger the germination of numerous weed seeds. If you don't remove the
thatch, these weed seeds might not germinate until after the thatch has
decomposed, which could be after your friend has planted. For best results,
allow the field to green-up as much as possible before you burn, but don't
let it green-up so much that it won't burn. Hope this helps.

Best, Mike
