This is a topic I will be following with great interest. Our C4
warm-season grasses evolved under general drought conditions, yet there
are some that love water. But how will they handle the cooler weather?
What prairie grasses would like to call Great Britain home?
Here in Texaspoor example for the UK our grasses that appreciate
moisture are switchgrass Panicum virgatum, Eastern Gamagrass Dactyloides
tripsicum, seep muhly Muhlenbergia reverchonii, and Big Muhly
Muhlenbergia lindheimeri. And what about Common reedgrass Phragmites
communis and giant cane Arundinaria gigantea?
Then the wild ryes come to mind: Elymus virginicus and canadensis
(spelling OK?) They grow mostly under shade trees here in central
Texas, but in better condition grasslands perhaps they could live out in
the sun like they do as far north as Dallas - Fort Worth, or so I hear!
A beautiful shade loving grass to consider is Inland Seaoats
Chasmanthium latiafolium.
No guarantees on any spelling!
