Hi James (Trager):
Good to hear from you! I continue to check out many nurseries (over
the years, > 25) for a source of Prairie Lily (Lilium philadelphicum) with
little or no success. In my state (Michigan) they are so rare that I
refuse to collect seed from them for my own native grassland
restoration/reconstruction project.
Thanks for the tip on Illinois Beach State Park, I have examined many
prairies in Illinois but not this one; will visit it this summer (but will
not collect seeds).
Regarding Michigan Lily (Turk's Cap Lily, Lilium michiganense). Three
years ago we transplanted the entire plant (source, from "rescued" plants);
each of the past 2 years the plants were vigorous and they flowered.
Transplantation of the bulblets yielded minimum growth the first year (a
few very short leaves), substantially better growth the second year (but,
not even close to flowering).
Have not yet observed overt seed germination. All (plants, bulblets,
seeds) were "placed" in soil that is moist and rich and in full sun, in our
restoration site.
Hope all is going well for you at the Shaw Nature Reserve. I have
examined many (> 50) native grassland restoration sites throughout the
midwest; your project at the Shaw Nature Reserve, near Gray Summit
Missouri, is clearly one of the very best! I am amazed what you have
accomplished in such a short period of time. Keep up the good work!
Cliff
(Clifford W. Welsch, Ph.D.)
P.S. I have several vials containing "preserved" ants for you from my
prairie restoration site in Michigan, will have more in a month or so and
will bring them down to you sometime this spring or summer (as my wife and
I examine midwest prairies).
