Re: grasses

On that note, too, I agree with the glyphosate.

I've also found it's not easy to get the forbs into the planting unless the grasses are knocked out in a fairly wide zone arond the forbs.

I've had very little luck getting forbs to come in from seed - I've resorted to planting plugs into the cleared zones, mulching heaviily, and watering generously is no timely rains. Penstemon digitalis has been the most successful forb so far in this situation.

We are spraying Select EC2 on the Green Meadows West prairie reconstruction today in order to knock out the non-native cool-season fescue and poa that we cannot burn. Weather is cooperating beautifully.Llet's hope it works.

Prairie grasses are not hard to get rid of. If they were we'd still have 30 million acres of them.

Glyphosate (the ingredient in Round-up) can be bought in the generic form quite cheaply. Depending upon the time of the year you can spray glyphosate on the green growth and it will give you a respectable kill. Fall is more effective than spring because of the translocation process. The chemical can be formulated to give good results regardless of the season (spring 3% and fall 1-1.5%).

Remember that it will kill anything green and wear protective clothing.
