What an interesting dilemma you have raised for me. Restoration of habitat
is something that I have promoted for years, but we have to consider why we
are doing it and what species we plan to benefit. Pheasants are an
introduced exotic from China. They were introduced for one purpose, to
shoot. Here in southern IL we have one small Prairie Chicken Preserve, a
listed species here. Pheasants have taken over their niche and threaten
their existence. It is a constant fight to keep pheasants from parasitising
their nests. Pheasants have been illegally released on the preserve in the
hopes of eliminating the chickens once and for all.

Years of environmental activism has pitted me against the "hook and bullet"
boys more than once because new aquisitions to the Shawnee National Forest
are always "managed" for game species over the habitat needs of nongame
species because of the strength of the hunting lobby.

In the hopes of pre-empting an attack from hunters out there, I do recognize
that much high quality habitat that exists today is a direct result of the
work they have done and the taxes they have paid. 

When restoring prairie we work very hard to eliminate exotic plants,
shouldn't we take the same consideration of the animals?
