Concerning the below notes, I would appreciate comments/discussion on when is
the 'Best time to Burn'. I have always thought that burning always does some
good especially for 'heating up' the soil so seeds would germinate. I believe I
have seen posts to this list that suggest that if you are wanting to control
woody vegetation, then fall may be best, since a fall burn would (hopefully)
weaken the woody vegetation so it would not survive winter. My area is Central
ILLinois and I finished my burning this week....thanks
I read about prescribed burning taking place in early April, and I get a
little concerned. Fire is a tool, but if not properly applied, it does no
good. Burning this early only promotes cool season exotics; the research
shows the best time to use fire for controlling these exotics is at the end
of April through mid May.
