Howdy
I was shocked when I read in my Nature Conservancy magazine that the US
government and TNC, among others) were getting involved in the Little Darby
project. In my not so humble opinion they have a good reason to be scared
of the federal government. The feds do not have a good record of
cooperation, they are more comfortable with dictating.
I was at the Ohio prairie conference and I heard some of the same arguments
that I hear now. People don't understand what the farmers are so upset
about, or dismiss their arguments as hogwash. This is terrible, and almost
guarantees that the project will fail.
The last thing we should be doing is putting family farms out of
business. What guarantee do the farmers have that this will not
happen? As an environmentalist I always look for proof the land is really
protected, why should we expect less from a farmer who makes his living off
the land? If the land is so important can we guarantee that the farmer can
still make a living, even if its not from farming?
