I read the piece on farmers and conservation with interest. One thought
which occurred to me was that perhaps a way to keep them from "highgrading"
all of the merchantable trees out of a prime natural area before selling it
might be to give them some sort of a premium for leaving the area intact. It
is very unfortunate that money is the only thing that talks nowadays, but
knowing this, we have to deal with it. Similarly, for prairie areas that are
to be purchased for protection and/or restoration, a premium might be paid to
those who leave the ground unplowed with the native flora intact. It's like
raising children, you reward good behavior and penalize bad behavior!
