Laurin,

I don't have personal experience with those seeds, but have looked up the
information in Norm Deno's book, 2nd edition. You might also subscribe the
Alpine-L (LISTSERV@NIC.SURFNET.NL): the people there are *seedaholics* :-)

Viola pedata is one of the species not listed in Dono's book. For violas in
general, he says that light is required in some species as well as
gibberelic acid-3. He also says that because Viola seed is difficult to
collect, it is often collected before it is ripe and then it rots. Seed
does not tolerate dry storage.

On Castilleja in general he writes (p. 113): There have been suggestions
that Castilleja seed is difficult to germinate and that chemical exudate
from the roots of host species (Castilleja are parasitic) are needed to
induce germination. None of this is in accord with the results herein, and
paterns were found that gave excellent germinatin without the addition of
any exogenous chemical. Most of the species germinate largely at 40. The
seedlings grow vigorously until the stem has elongated to the point of
producing 5-10 true leaves. Then the seedlings lose vogor and die off
showing the need for a host plant. These conclusions were based on studies
onseventeen samples. Not photoeffects were found in five experiments.
Although the germination of the seed occurs without any exudate from a
host, it is still polssible and perhaps probable that an exudate from a
host is required for the devolopment of the haustoria. Dry storage is
tolerated for a year... He goes on to give specific results for 8 species.
