Thanks for the quick response. After re-reading my original post, I think
maybe I didn't give folks enough information and since then I probably
answered my own questions.
The CRP acreage we are dealing with totals about ten acres. This is the
second ten year contract cycle. During the first ten years Johnson grass
started popping up when a mowing contractor started doing all the farms in
the immediate vicinity and spread seed from farm to farm. The patches never
exceeded a few feet in diameter and were kept in control with mowing and
spot spraying. This year we hand planted half of the acreage in hardwood
seedlings and the Johnson Grass is exactly the same there as it has been
for the past ten years.
The area we planted with the drill is totally infested. Neighbors joke
about "that fine stand of Johnson Grass". There is also a lot of velvet
leaf and jimson weed that was never in that field before. Closer inspection
indeed showed Johnson Grass in rows seven inches on center, the spacing of
the drill. Also, discing in the spring "improves" sparse stands of Johnson
grass. We know the corn, milo, and sunflowers are not a problem.
The lesson learned, clean all equipment thoroughly. We picked every seed
out of the bins on the drill prior to adding our prairie mix. We failed to
remove the tubes and clean them.
