I agree: Even though the tops of the tubes are open it's got to get
pretty warm inside. Maybe that's another reason they grow faster, if they
like it warmer.
I'm no plant physiologist, but I would guess there would be very slightly
less CO2 in the tube since the plant is pulling it out of the air.
