Ken,
You asked about That @!#$%!^&* buckthorn. Since you didn't ask for a magic
bullet, or lots of chemicals, may I suggest the "Weed Wrench". It is a fine
tool; it does require some elbow grease, but you are able to pull them right
out. 

I purchased my "Weed Wrench Light" last July, with which you are  able to
pull out up to 1.5" dia. trunks/shoots. Before that I used a smaller (mini)
unit.
