My wife and I are Stewards for a site in the Cook County Forest Preserves
south of Chicago.  We started out thinking we could cut the larger
buckthorns and not herbicide this only meant we had to come back and cut
five or ten stumps a few years later and then herbicide with garlon. Fire
seems to work well on anything small but they don't provide much fuel so you
need other sources.  Good luck, there is hope we have been successful in
cleaning up lage areas here but it's hard work.
