HONEYSUCKLE

Carmen,
Our 40 acres has some early to mid successional forest and perimeter fence
rows that haven't been maintained (by choice) for thirty years. When we
bought the place 18 years ago, the honeysuckle was so dense in the fence
rows and the first 100 feet of the forest edge that a person could not
penetrate it. I thought the situation was hopeless.

I'm not at all certain why it is happening, but the honeysuckle seems to be
in rapid decline and species diversity is increasing. I believe it is being
shaded out in the woods. In areas where it draped, strangled and smothered
trees it has been reduced to 6" ground cover.

We ran fires through the open areas (and the fence rows once thanks to a
negligent neighbor) and the honeysuckle never recovered.

Goats love honeysuckle and I know of one person locally that rents out his
goats to clear land.
