I noticed the thread on seeds being expensive. For
what it is worth, a local rancher has 200 bales left of
pure native hay cut in October of 1997, which according to
our local range science expert, has Switchgrass (lowland)
and Big Bluestem seeds in it, plus a bit of E
Gamagrass. The hay comes from a well-known, well-managed
100 acre prairie remnant in North Texas that has very little
exotic species. The site is about 50 miles NE of Dallas
on Houston Black clay, in an area with 40 inch annual
rainfall and periodic droughts. I think zone 5. The site was burned
the year before and there is little trash in the hay. The rancher
is asking 21$ a round 1300 pound bale, delivered to
our place, about 5 miles from his.
We cannot buy all the hay. I estimate that after we and
another restorer are done, about 125 bales will be left.
