Re: Weaver's research

Andy,

The only clue that I can provide is that Ada Hayden listed a few of her Iowa sites as being the same as those of Weaver's (and she mentions another few of Weaver's study areas that had subsequently been plowed up). Hayden provided legal description info and maps showing the localities within sections for her list of the 22 prairies that she felt deserved consideration for purchase by the state as prairie preserves. Hayden and Kalsow prairies were purchased during the 1940's, and several others on her list (Cayler, Steele, Freda Hafner Kettlehole, etc.) have been protected as state preserves since then.

The citation is:
Hayden, Ada. 1947 [1946]. A progress report on the preservation of prairie. Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science 53: 45-82

Hope this helps! John Pearson and I are putting a table together (it will be in the Prairie Conference Proceedings) of the current status of the 22 sites.

I have recently seen a map of the prairie sites in his book, that Weaver did research on and was wondering if any one knew how to find out the specific legal descriptions or at least sections and townships of where this research was done.  Obviously I have heard of some of the preserve/protected areas were the sites of Weaver research but I am more interested in determining the fate of some of the other more obscure areas. Thanks!
