Anyone who suggested raccoons or skunks has my vote as being the culprit.
We have seen much evidence for both of them, especially when it is dry, as
they are looking for worms which are attracted to the wet soil. Raccoons
are also just plain curious and seem to investigate nearly everything which
has been disturbed. Spring is when we see the most evidence of skunks and
summer it is generally raccoons. Watering a larger area if possible might
help.
