I remember a day at the Morton Arboretum where four of us did nothing
more than dig out field bindweed from a 30x40' bed. Short of spraying
selected plants with an herbicide or burning the lawn, I don't think that
anything else will do other than good old-fashioned digging (with a LOT
of patience).
