Cicadas, as stated in the just arrived letter from Arkansas, do not
chew, though they do suck sap. The females also cut small slits in
stems (usually of woody plants) which may cause 8-12-inch lengths of
twig tips to brown and topple over. This is especially evident on
ash, elm, shingle oak and rough-leaved dogwood around here right now,
where we have the same brood of cicadas finishing up their
every-13-year orgy. In Shaw Arboretum's planted prairie, the cicadas
have heavily damaged saplings of these species which sprouted up in
the unburned portions this year.
I don't know what's eating your ragweed, but in your murdering them,
mowing is preferable to herbicide treatments which clear the ground
for new weeds to sprout. You probably know this , but ...
