Re: D.B.Sullivan prairie

David Sullivan in Potosi Wisconsin, my name is Lawrence Sullivan and I'm
from Juneau Wisconsin. I will be planting about 17 acres in native
prairie on CRP field next year (1998). We will be burning in the spring
then using two or three applications of Round-up before planting a flax
covercrop in early fall then seeding with a mix of 4-5 grasses and 30-80
forbes species. We're a little leary about planting all 17 acres at
once since the seed will be quite expensive, but as you know, the CRP
contract calls for planting in the first year. Ours will be a short
grass prairie with a range of wet to dry mesic soils. We're hoping this
will allow for a wider variety of forbe species across the 17 acres.
We've been toying with the idea of planting in stages (forbes in fall
then grasses the next spring, or planning an overseeding of certain
species in the second or third year) but we are concerned that may be
too labor intensive.

We have about 2 acres with Canadian Thistle which concerns us but if
worst comes to worst I'm prepared to pull the out by hand if it takes me
all summer!

We don't have plans for any Bison but perhaps some smaller grazing
animals might be appropriate. Would sheep be good? We don't have
fences now so that could be a big expense. Do you have to break the
prairie up with fences to control the grazing?

Let me know what problems you are dealing with.
