Regarding a bindweed-infested prairie planting in Michigan, it may be
that patience will be the best weapon. Every place is different, but in
eastern Missouri, at least, bindweed declines as the prairie planting
fills in and becomes better established. Broadleaf herbicides such as
2,4-D, etc. will do as much or more damage to native forbs as to
bindweed. Manage the site to favor the prairie plants, and over time the
bindweed should decline. This is not true of all prairie weeds, some
love the same conditions as prairie plants, so this is not meant to be a
general advisory against herbicide use, especially if it's judicious, in
prairie plantings.
