Daryl/Julie
This past fall I collected seeds from Geum triflorum (Prairie Smoke)
in our tallgrass prairie (south cental Michigan). I put the seeds in our
refrigerator on November 1 and on February 1 (3 months of refrigeration) I
planted the seeds in a flat with commerical seed-starter (lightly covered)
in our basement greenhouse. In just 10 days, the flat (1 ft by 2 ft) was
covered with seedlings
(500-600). Two weeks later, each seedling was placed in single small pots
with commerical potting soil. To date, all seedlings are doing great; I
have fertilized them only twice. This has been my first attempt to
germinate Geum triflorum therefore I cannot comment on germination as a
function of time of cold stratification, although all that I have read has
indicated that cold stratification is helpful to increase germination, but
not essential. Hope this is helpful to you. Clifford Welsch
