Important legislation needs email

Title: Important legislation needs email
Dear Prairie People,

In our newsletter The Prairie Dog the Native Prairies Association has written several times about a most important legislation (called CARA) that has been prepared for Congress.  It will FINALLY provide TONS OF MONEY for "regular" ole wildlife, not just game animals.  Each state stands to benefit.  And prairies will benefit too, finally.  This is part of the nationwide Teaming with Wildlife initiative.

PLEASE, please, please. If you will only write one letter this year on behalf of nature, THIS IS THE ONE TO WRITE!  I've included below a copy of the email that I sent out to show how easy it is.  Just say something!

                 RIGHT NOW.

THE FOLLOWING TEXT IS FROM "TEAMING WITH WILDLIFE":

The House Resources Committee has scheduled ONLY TWO days of Congressional
hearings on Tuesday, March 9th, and Wednesday, March 10th, on H.R. 701- the Conservation and Reinvestment Act  (CARA). The Committee will also hear testimony on H.R. 798, sponsored by U.S. Rep. George Miller (D-CA), which also provides for new funding for conservation
and wildlife programs from OCS revenues.

Now is a CRITICAL time to specifically focus your efforts on members of the
Resources Committee. Let them know how important CARA's Title III funding
for state-level wildlife conservation is to you and urge their strong
support. This is the first hurdle in the legislative process and a VERY
important one. Most bills never even make it out of committee, and the
ones that do pass committee oftentimes look dramatically different from
their original introduced version. We need to ensure that wildlife
conservation doesn't get lost in the shuffle of competing interests.

We strongly encourage you to coordinate with other supporters in your
state to contact the Resources Committee members from your state listed

Copy of my letter to each of the above:

Dear Rep. XXX,

I am member of the Board of Directors of the Native Prairies Association of Texas.  Our Association is a member of the Team with Wildlife coalition and  whole-heartedly supports the Conservation and Reinvestment Act.  We urge you to vote for it in its present form.

Funds for wildlife have been focused primarily on game animals, often to the exclusion of habitat issues for other wildlife.

The Native Prairies Association of Texas is specifically concerned about the drastically declining populations of grassland birds and their praire habitats in Texas.    All kinds of prairie in Texas ‹short, mixed and tall- are very much declined due to land use changes to standard and arid-land farming, exotic grass pastures, and urbanization.

We need funding to assist us in our strategic plans to conserve what remains and restore other lands.  Thank you for your attention to this matter.  Please support CARA.
