kansas entomological society

The Department of Entomology at Kansas State University cordially
invites everyone to the 75th Annual Meeting of the Kansas Entomological
Society to be held April 30 - May 1, 1999, here in Manhattan. The title
of this year's symposium is: "Prairie Insects: Ecology, Biodiversity,
and Conservation." Themes of the symposium include the ecological roles
of insects and other arthropods in native grasslands, biodiversity
studies, habitat relationships, conservation issues, and how arthropod
communities are impacted by grassland management practices such as
prescribed burning and haying. The general session features 12 minute
oral presentations or posters that can relate to any aspect of arthropod
biology. There will be a buffet/reception at the Konza Prairie and
guided tours of this
remarkable tallgrass prairie preserve located just a few miles south of
Manhattan. Also planned is a workshop on identification of common
dragonflies and damselflies of the Great Plains, organized by Ralph
Charlton and Roy Beckemeyer. The workshop will stress identification of
adults through the use of preserved specimens and newly constructed
computer-based visual keys that emphasize useful field marks.

Questions concerning the symposium, workshop, or meeting should be
directed to: Ralph Charlton, Associate Professor, Department of
Entomology, Kansas State University,232 W. Waters Hall, Manhattan, KS
