Thanks to all who responded to my question regarding riparian
vegetation.
Here is a summary of the responses I received.
Suggested readings:
Schoolcraft's Travels into Arkansas
Other notes of interest:
Numerous states (Wisconsin was the example given) and other areas have
benefited from reconstructed presettlement vegetation maps. However,
these are often historic rather than true presettlement maps as many of
the sources (e.g. GLO notes) were completed after some settlement had
occurred.
Other sources of information on original vegetative condition:
-fossil record of pollen grains
-soils
Interestingly, NRCS won't cost share/CRP in riparian buffer strips if
they are planted and restored to prairie, they will only cost share
forest or tree plantings. Seems a shame that our fed govt. is
inadvertently promoting prairie remnant destruction.
I hope my elaborations are useful and do not detract from original
messages I received.
Also, as you may have noticed, I only received one suggestion regarding
literature pertaining to this subject, if anyone knows of any others,
please do let me know. As this is really what I am after.
