We have used it (as Stinger) to spot spray Canada thistle patches (shoot by shoot) at
Indiangrass Hills (Iowa County IA) for the last two years. Our spraying seems most
effective if the patches first are mowed after domestic grasses have gotten most of their
spring growth, the thistle allowed to regrow to 4" to 1' tall, and then Stinger applied.
In every case of this shoot by shoot application, we have seen a >95% reduction in the
number of Canada thistle shoots sprouting in each patch with each treatment cycle. Of
course spot treatment by blanket spraying of patches probably would be less effective
because delivery rates to target species would be far less than treating each shoot. We
indeed seem to see this in that the resprouting appears to be more vigorous in the patches
which we had commercially sprayed with Curtail (a 2, 4D and Stinger mixture).
As Carl Kurtz implies, Transline (Stinger) is specific not only for most legumes but also
for most composite species.
Unfortunately it seems wholly ineffective on Lespedeza cuneata (serecia lespedeza, Chinese
bushclover) -- *not* a labeled species. We tested it (Stinger) on one of our two small
infestations and all one treatment did was suppress flowering -- there was no apparent
other effect on any of the mature or larger immature individuals (smaller immature
individuals were not treated in this deep grass).
