Some distinction should be made between burning based on sound science and
burning based on tradition. Spring burning is rooted in European settlement
practices while in presettlement times both lightning caused fires and
man-caused fires were primarily in the summer and fall months. In Missouri we
have done a great deal of research into the effects of seasonal burning on
both insects and plants. We found that winter and spring burning causes the
vegetation to become dominated by warm season grasses while fall and summer
burning causes a shift toward forb domination (ie. flowers). In fact, summer
and spring burns are at the opposite ends of the spectrum of results. If you
want to see a lot of flowers then burn in the summer. If you want almost all
warm season grasses then burn in the spring. I can show you photos that can
easily illustrate this point.
