Greetings all,
I would like to invite you to our 2nd annual Herpathon! This year the
event will take place at Humbug Marsh! As many of you already know this
site has a long history of efforts to protect it. Humbug Marsh
represents the last mile of natural shoreline on the U.S. mainland of
the Detroit River. We have a unique opportunity to be the first to
survey this site for amphibians and reptiles. We hope to find a variety
of Michigan's herpetofauna maybe even some rare ones (I am pretty good
at doing that these days)!
So here are some details:
What:
An intensive 12 hour amphibian and reptile survey
Where:
Humbug Marsh, located in Gibraltar
When:
Friday, June 24th from 8:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m.
Who:
You of course!
How:
We will be conducting visual surveys as well as more intensive funnel
trap and dip net surveys. No voucher specimens will be collected but
lots of pictures are encouraged!!!
Why:
Working with the MDNR's Natural Heritage Program and the Grosse Isle
Land Conservancy, the Herpathon is designed to identify amphibian and
reptile diversity and distribution at Humbug Marsh as part of the
Michigan Herp Atlas project. This information will be used to aid in
assessing the distribution and diversity of reptiles and amphibians as
well as aid in management strategies for species at this site. Also,
this event is intend for volunteers to HAVE FUN!!!
Provided below is a tentative event schedule. Please forward this
email to colleagues who might be interested in attending. You are
strongly encouraged to stay the whole day, but it is not mandatory.
Also please note this event is intended for adults and remember to bring
plenty of insect repellent and water!
