Hey, Everyone on this list :-D

Austin TX Prairies and Native Plants Need Your Help By This Thursday
Evening

WHAT: The City of Austin is holding a public hearing on a proposal
for an Open Space Bond Election. The recommendations proposed by an
appointed citizens' committee which held many of its own public
hearings include $5 Million for acquisition of identified tallgrass
prairie remnants.

o?<
But City Staff have recommended $50 million LESS for total open space
acquisition than the citizen's advisory committee recommended. This
means in the staff recommendations that fund for prairie/native plant
land acquisition have been removed *!@&*%*

It would be really lovely if you took just 1 minute to go to

http://www.ci.austin.tx.us/council/groupemail.htm

and leave a brief message about how wonderful and rare prairies are
and that it would be delightful if Austin were given a chance to
preserve its remnant prairie sites with all their beautiful plants.
I think they would be surprised and delighted to hear that prairies
and native plants have a broad constituency lol

It just takes a minute and is actually quite fun to do!

Thank you.

o?<
Tallgrass prairie is the most endangered large ecosystem in North
America with less than 1% of the original prairie remaining. The
east side of Austin is in the Blackland Prairie and northwest Austin
is in the Crosstimbers and Prairies, yet Austin has preserved almost
no prairie for future generations. Prairie is the habitat for many
of our native plants and grassland birds.

Most of the remaining recommended open space acquisition funds are in
the west where Austin has already spent many millions of dollars
protecting land, and again there is a lack of funds for the the
east. Due to the increasing rate of development in the area, it is
"Now or Never" for these prairie sites!

Come and wear the special blue and green buttons the open space
coalition will have available that will show the Council you support
more open space funding. If you don't want to speak, then sign up
and give your time to Kunda Lee Wicce or any number of others we can
recommend to you. Please come and attend for prairies!

We suggest saying something like: "Please ask staff to recalculate
how much open space Austin can afford to protect in the bond
election. Please protect our prairies and use the citizen's advisory
committee prairie recommendation! It is Now or Never for these
prairie sites. We love them and they are important to us. Please
save our prairies for future generations!"

If you cannot attend this important public hearing, it would be
terrific if you would either:
Send the City Council email at http://www.ci.austin.tx.us/council/
groupemail.htm with a message like the above one.
Stop by City Hall some time before the hearing and leave a message
for the City Council at their computer kiosk inside 301 W. 2nd
Street. The information desk person can help you use it.
