Wanted: Nonhistoric Fill Dirt
Asarco has done a good deed by agreeing not to use loess soil from the
bluffs in Council Bluffs as construction fill at its site near downtown
Omaha.
The company, which has closed its lead refinery, needs enough fill-dirt to
cover 17 acres to a depth of six feet. This will be part of a cap that is
designed to seal off contaminants and allow the area to be used as green
space and access to the Missouri River.
In the past, some of the soil from the Loess Hills in southern Council
Bluffs has been hauled away for use in construction projects. Gov. Tom
Vilsack has signed legislation creating the Loess Hills Preservation and
Development Alliance, whose 28-member board will use state funding to
preserve and promote the area.
But it was thanks to an existing group, the Loess Hills Preservation
Society, that Asarco decided to obtain its cap soil elsewhere. The society
has been active in trying to protect the Loess Hills for more than three
years. The society and Asarco deserve credit for their effort.
