Prairie Conference - 3 March 2001
The Prairie Enthusiasts celebrate 13 years with a Conference
Eau Claire, November 20, 2000:
The Prairie Enthusiasts, a volunteer organization working to protect,
restore, and promote prairies in Wisconsin, will hold their annual banquet
and conference on March 2 and 3, 2001 in Eau Claire.
Conference sessions include: habitat restoration, prairie insects, seed
collecting, buffalo and elk of western Wisconsin, invasive weed control,
local ecotype issues, kids sessions, and K-12 prairie curriculum examples.
Land owners, conservation managers, biologists, teachers and the general
public are invited to attend to learn more about our prairie and savanna
habitat, as well as the issues we face as we attempt to preserve them.
Of particular interest is Paul Gruchow, who will address "What Prairies
Might Teach Us" in the conference keynote. Gruchow will address both
practical matters, such as prairies as a model for a new kind of
agriculture, to more abstract concepts like what prairies might teach us
about how communities prosper and endure.
Mr. Gruchow is the author of seven volumes of natural history essays,
including Grass Roots and The Necessity of Empty Places. He has been awarded
many honors, including three Minnesota Book Awards, the Critics Choice Award
from the San Francisco Review of Books, and seven citations in "The Best
American Essays." A frequent contributor to the Utne Reader, New York
Times, Hungry Mind Review, and other periodicals, he divides his time
between writing and speaking on environmental issues, serving as the
Keller-Edelstein Writer-in-Residence at the University of Minnesota, and as
senior lecturer of Superior Studies at Wolf Ridge (an environmental studies
program for college students).
To register for the banquet or conference, visit The Prairie Enthusiasts web
site (http://www.prairie.pressenter.com) or call Deb Konkel at 715-839-2782.
About The Prairie Enthusiasts
------------------------------
The Prairie Enthusiasts is a grassroots, volunteer based organization
concerned with the preservation, maintenance and recovery of the tallgrass
prairie and oak savanna ecosystems of Wisconsin and northern Illinois.
TPE is the only conservation group in our region dedicated solely to the
perpetuation of the remaining vestiges of the area's once vast prairies and
savannas. These last surviving pieces represent less than 1% of the prairie
and savanna heritage we inherited 150 years ago.
