Re: Large Prairies in Eastern Kansas and SW Missouri?

Frank,
Greetings from Missouri!

You should be able to find all of the information you need at the Missouri Prairie Foundation web site at http://www.moprairie.org/

If you select *Public Prairies in Missouri* you will get maps and lists of prairies to visit. Clicking on a selected prairie will give you very detailed information.

There are dozens of public prairies in SW Missouri. Prairie State Park near Liberal is the largest, and it might be your best bet. Below is some information from the Missouri Department of Conservation.  Enjoy your trip!

Prairie State Park
128 NW 150th Lane
Liberal, MO 64762
(417) 843-6711
16 miles west of Lamar, off Hwy. 160, north on Hwy NN to Central Road in Barton County.
The gently rolling, grass-covered landscape is the state's largest example of native prairie, which once covered more than one-third of Missouri. The 3,500-acre park protects a variety of native prairie grasses, flowers and distinctive prairie animals, including prairie chickens and bison. Picnicking, hiking, exploring the visitor center, and observing wildlife are featured here. Limited camping is available by contacting the park.

I am planning a cross country bicycle tour next summer and I noticed
that the route I'm taking runs very close to an area of Eastern Kansas
and SW Missouri where I've heard there are a few large tallgrass
prairies.  I believe one is managed by the TNC, another by the Forest
Service, and the third is a prairie and historical part on the site of
the Laura Engles Wilder (sp?) cabin, owned by Bill Kurtis of the New
Explorers.  If anyone could give me some general information about these
prairies, as well as their precise location, I would greatly appreciate it.
