I am editor of Tracks magazine, a conservation magazine for upper-eleemntary students published by the Michigan United Conservation Clubs. MUCC maintains a backyard habitat that includes a large prairie. This is just starting to mature. We have little bluestem, Indian grass, wild bergamot, yarrow, white snakeroot, lance-leaved coreopsis, and black-eyed Susans. We have also planted individual plants of smooth penstemon, false indigo, purple prairie clover, New England aster, rattlesnake master, compass plant, and beardtongue. The little bluestem now is starting to mature and turn that copper-red in the fall. We had a work day during the summer to pull Queen Anne's lace. Yellow sweetclover also has been a problem. In the middle of the prairie we have a special Zuern style bluebird house that is horizontal so predators cannot get the eggs. We also have a red raspberry bramble patch. A planned burn may take place soon. If you want more information, write me, Christie Bleck, at Tracks, Box 30235, Lansing, MI 48909. Bye. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To sign-off this list, send email to majordomo@mallorn.com with the message text UNSUBSCRIBE PRAIRIE --------------------------------------------------------------------- To sign-off this list, send email to majordomo@mallorn.com with the message text UNSUBSCRIBE PRAIRIE
