There's a great list of wet-mesic and wet prairie plants in the
Tallgrass Restoration Handbook (Island Press, 1997), which probably
everyone on this list ought to own.
I especially like Anemone canadensis, Iris virginica, Solidago
ridellii, Aster puniceus and Chelone glabra as associates of
Filipendula rubra. The latter is technically a rhizomatous herbaceous
perennial, not a shrub, though it was in the past classified as a
Spirea, which contains many shrubby species.
