Your experience is just the the opposite of mine. I find not only native
grasses but also native forbs in road ditches all the time, or at least
more than I ever expected. I find them mostly along back county gravel
roads (Iowa).
And I "seem" to be finding more all the time. But then spraying has
decreased over the last few years.
I have to drive the road when the grasses or forbs are flowering in
order to recognize the plants. There are roads I have traveled a lot,
but always at the wrong time. And then, at the exact right time, there's
a big patch of swamp betony, anemones, prairie clovers, phlox or
gentians blooming. I am always amazed that it took me so long to see
them. But then when they are done blooming, I have a heck of a time
finding the exact spot again.
The grass patches seem to be expanding as the years go by as do the
cream gentian patches.
