When looking at these types of statements and reports please look at the
concentrations used in the study and compare them to the actual exposure
involved in using the product. If you take anything (even natural organic
compounds found in nature) and expose people or laboratory animals to extreme
doses you will find reactions.
In restoration we need to use herbicides to accomplish our management needs.
In choosing the particular herbicide we should use the minimum amount needed
applied in a responsible professional manner.
The studies you will find would have been done by Monsanto or funded by them.
As the manufacturer they have to study their products effects. But look at who
did the studies and where they have been published. With peer review the
methods would have been scrutinized.
As a professional in restoration the use of herbicides is not an issue. The
particular product, application rates, seasonality, and methods will be
scritinized to ensure the proper effect to the ecosystem with minimal adverse
effects. I use Round-up and the aquatic formulation Rodeo on a regular basis.
I have also read the MSDS sheet, specimen labels and the studies cited. I
still use the products. I will not drink the concentrate or inhale large
amounts of over spray... but I will use it in my own yard with my kids....
( PS - I do not work for or get any compensation from Monsanto or any other
herbicide company.)

<< I clipped this from our local newspaper last week. Previously in checking
a link for Roundup I had the impression it was a relatively safe, low toxic
herbicide. We use it in small quantities to kill quack/brome/non-natives a
few weeks prior to seeding.
The article is in reference to pesticides in use by public schools in the
area, a radius of about 25 miles. Here is what was said about Roundup.
"Contains glyphosate which is acutely toxic to humans and can cause eye and
skin irritation, cardiac depression, stomach pain and vomiting. Causes
increased frequency of tumors in lab animals in thyroid, pancreas, liver."
After reading this, I was considering posting a message asking about the
safety and wisdom of using Roundup. What better, practical alternatives
are there? (Using sheep is not an option)
I also noticed the last few years many farm fields in this area are using
"roundup corn and roundup soybeans". Has there been any studies done on
the safety of using Roundup on a large scale? 80-160 acre plantings?
Multiple years in a row?
thanks, Bonnie >>
