I'm embarassed! I'm only making the connection because I'd read
that trillium has red seed heads in the fall, and I thought I saw
trilliums in this area of the woods in the spring. What I found
are very similar to the image at <http://www.hirts.com/arum.jpg>,
only not quite as tall. At this time of year, there were no leaves,
just a clump of berries on the ground, sometimes attached to a
spadix that lead to an underground corm about an inch or so in diameter.
