Property taxes do contribute to this issue; however, landowners who permanently
set aside land as natural areas
get a tax break for doing so. I wish more farmers would do this, rather than
sell their land to big developers.
Our natural areas in Illinois are so fragmented that they cannot sustain many of
the species that occur in them now. This is what the public at large does not
understand. We need to educate the public and the landowners about the impact
that fragmentation has had on our native species. Some people don't want to be
educated. They would rather keep their heads in the sand. This is what I find
truly disappointing. More education is usually the key to solving most
problems. But, it goes back to that old saying, "You can lead a horse to water,
but you can't make them drink."
