Prairie Roadtrip Suggestions?

This coming week I will be driving from TN through IL to above Madison, WI primarily to see native plant nurseries, prairie remnants, restorations and other native plantings.  I'll also be tempted by good birding spots.  I am totally unfamiliar with this part of the country and would appreciate any suggestions for interesting side trips that any of you may have to offer.
