| Several weeks ago, I heard about 300 acres of top-quality blacksoil virgin prairie that were plowed up and planted to soybeans just this year. It's not hard to figure out one probable reason why. If you harvest prairie hay for income, as this landowner previously did, you are on your own, especially when bad times come. But if you raise soybeans, you can get into Farm Bill programs and get program payments.
One major reason why the current Farm Bill is so generous to corn and soybeans (and so ungenerous to many other land uses, including virgin prairie hayfields and pastures), is because of lobbying and campaign donations by big financial interests that benefit from huge corn and soybean crops. I have read that ADM is a prime example. One more reason to tell Congress that we need a better Farm Bill. Many thanks to the people on this listserve who have been distributing and using the article I posted about the Farm Bill and prairies. I really appreciate it!
