ok, serious discussion. i'm looking for input on male
pollinators. This year I'm planning to grow the 909.5 Lloyd and 792
Armstrong for male pollinators, and was wondering how come a lot of people seem
to pollinate with seed stocks which have done good(935, 946.5, 801.5, ect)
, instead of pollinating with the male pollinators which made them famous (909.5
lloyd, 824.5 veens, 562 rose). That's why i'm planting the 909.5.
The 792 will be planted because it has been self pollinated enough that the
resulting seeds should have added "hybrid vigor" from crossing
unrelated inbred lines. This is possibly also why the 909.5 and other male
pollinators have done well, is that they came from self pollinated
pumpkins. Since so many of the pumpkins are fairly closely related,
perhaps crossing with a self pollinated male is just enough
"hybridization" the seeds need to give them an added competitive
kick. Any of you wise, experienced growers have any particular reasons you
make the crosses you do?
