Dan,
I will not comment on the inner workings of the GPC steering committee for
I am not a member of the steering committee. I was one of the inner circle of
people involved in the beginnings of the GPC.......actually before it was
even called the GPC. What I can comment on is the Topsfield situation (being
one of the directors of the NEPGA. There is no rule either written or implied
that forbids consideration of another GPC site in New England. There has
never been a formal request from another weigh off site in New England to
join the GPC. The closest a group has come to considering admittance into the
GPC in New England would be from the Rhode Island Growers. To the best of my
knowledge, John Castellucci, Don Langevin , Ron Wallace and the rest of the
gang down there decided that it would be better to pick another weekend to
weigh off for two reasons. 1 the Rhode Island Growers like to go to Topsfield
and compete and #2 on another weekend they can get some of the people down
from Topsfield to see their weighoff. Brian Kitney and I run the New Milford
Pumpkin Festival and it is purposely held the weekend after Topsfield so we
can go to Topsfield and then run ours the following weekend. The NEPGA was
founded by Hugh Wiberg, Tom Cone and myself. If there was a rule about
Topsfield being exclusive in New England, I would know about it. If a new
site has applied in your area, I would bet that the GPC would contact all the
people involved on both sides and check things out first.
