Mike,

> My way of not digging the 4 inch peat pots to look for germinating seedlings this year is going to my inlaws on Long Island, having soaked and started my seeds wednesday and thursday. I will be returning to Pennsylvania tomorrow afternoon, with three plants on top of the fridge with a plastic garbage bag over the top. Any bets on what is peeking through? Here are the three I have started.. Checkon 815, Lloyd 935, and the Eaton 1009.5. The top of the fridge method is the only one I have ever used, and have had 100 percent germination.
I do have one question to address to the general public.... In a test germination, my Rockwell 290 popped up in 4 days, but after 9 days it was almost 12 " tall. I was checking out Bill kournakakis' site and the How TO Grow World Class Giant Pumpkins II, and the pics I have seen of others young plants show them really short with some true leaves. Does the use of grow lights enhance the plants leaf growing ability, or does the non use of grow lights possibly make the plant grow tall before showing some true leaves? I also give the seed coat some help getting of from the leaves, maybe the energy I save the plant makes it grow taller.. Just curious.. Porbably not a problem, but it is a question that I dont know why, and heck, this forum is for these type questions, correct?
Looking forward to 2000, I want to be the first to win the GPC and WPC crown in the same year.. I dont set my goals too high now, do I? See you in Clarence on September 30th with my second biggest, and in Altoona on October 7th with my biggest..
