Propagated 746 Scherber plant from 2000 season...The end of the clones...

Well, this is the end of the clones...as my all winter project is closing down for the season real soon. The plants currently growing inside, will soon be planted outdoors in my garden, and also in many other growers gardens as well. I can finally make a final posting to the list informing everyone that I have finally successfully kept a plant strain growing from one season into the next! Thanks everyone who supported this project and have e mailed me this winter.

Some of you who have followed this story probably wondered what ever happened to that guy trying to keep that 746 Scherber plant alive all winter. Well, I am limited for time, so make most postings at the www.bigpumpkins web site, as there you can post a diary of your year [a great resource for those people who have not yet visited it]. My year has not ended, and I doubt it ever will! On October 4th, 1997, the initial thought to propagate a pumpkin plant came about while picking a local growers new city record pumpkin. This was the only year I did not grow due to family problems that summer. It was also the year I made my first "clone". Three years and six months have elapsed since that time, and that crazy idea I myself once did not think would ever work, is now just weeks away from becoming a successful reality!

There will be 12 people across the country who will be soon involved in the on going experiment and research. Len Stellpflug was the first pumpkin grower ever to get a clone through the mail. The other growers will get theirs on the dates they requested. Many have e mailed me asking "why propagate pumpkins"? To find out in detail, go to Pumpkinnook at this link: http://www.pumpkinnook.com/commune/featpic.htm There is an informative article which "E-Z Pumpkin" posted on his web site. I'll be sure to put an occasional update here during the season to let everyone know how everyone is doing with this plant. In case you did not know, the 746 Scherber grew Joe his 1009 pounder last summer. That is one of the plants I have kept alive. It should give everyone a better topic this summer to discuss, rather than "the Ducet scandal" we all had so much fun reading about last year!
