I can certainly vouch for the millipedes eating live materials. Last fall I
brought in a squash plant "clone" planted in regular patch soil.....all the
millipedes ready for winter suddenly became active again....and the eggs
layed for next year hatched.....that means many many millipedes....they
preceeded to munch on the organic matter in the soil and on the roots to my
clones.When pulling out a dead clone vine all that was left under the leaf
nodes was nubs where roots were. Millipedes are not really harmless
bugs..........and don't get me started about the white flies....its amazing
the plant is still alive.........G
