What seeds did you end up going with??

Glenn:
Yes! I have plants out past 6ft! I'm still behind my buddy, Tim Canniff,
whose plants are far larger than mine! He's about 2 weeks ahead of me at a
lower latitude on the Gulf Coast, a definite advantage by location!
I suppose I should have posted a patch update to the list, but with all this
talk of snow blizzards, late storms, etc, felt some sensitivity to the
northern list members was appropriate. But, since you've asked, here it is.
I have two sites this year, one at home and one at a friend's home nearby. I
agreed to prove some seeds for Brad Walters of Indiana and word spread a bit.
Another grower, John Maston from OH had a good cross he wanted proven, so I
took his on as well.
Of course, I wanted to grow Shellie's 824, your 1064.5 and a couple of
others. After starting seeds on my own, Brad Fed X'd me 3 seedlings he was
about to pitch, which added to my count. I planted Brad's seedings, then the
others germinated!
Besides the Walters 641, I decided on the 824 Cramer, two Maston 570's and
one of your 1064.5 seeds. Your seed germinated, just refused to break soil.
It never got past the tap root stage. Hence, decided to save it for next
season, and will germinate it under watchful eye after filing the seed coat.
Since I am covered up with plants and barely enough room for those I have, I
will grow your 1064.5 next season, when I have more room and time.
Patch #1
Walters 641 (Holland 657 X Stelts 801.5)
Walters 319 (Stelts 801.5 X Checkon 815)
Walters 480 (Stelts 801.5 X Checkon 815)
All three of these plants are vining vigorously.
Patch #2
Walters 641
2 Maston 570's (1006 X Stelts 801.5)
Cramer 824 (1006 X Hunt 991)
The latter two look like a good cross, eh?
The Walters 641 in Patch #1 has a nice female developing on the main vine
about 4 ft, from the stump, with another right behind it near the vine tip.
The 480 Walters also has a nice female developing on the main. Neither the
641 nor the 480 have side vines yet, just lovely females coming along.
I had two large male blooms yesterday on the 641, with another male bloom
this AM on the 480. No blooms yet on the 319. All of the plants have dark
green leaves, so the Osmocote is working as it should.
The plants slated for patch #2 are small, sitting in large nursery 3 gallon
buckets, waiting for me to plant them today at the second location. I look
for them to take off like wildfire. This will be my first experience with
container grown plants. Not ideal, but doable when necessary.
Without going into detail, this was the year that was! I got a late start.
Wanted to be in by end of Jan. Cold weather and lows in the 30's in late Feb
halted that progress. Still went frostless this year and our ground never
freezes. It's the arctic blasts of cold air that we worry about.
Glenn, thanks for asking and I will be eager to grow the 1064.5 this next
season. I was disappointed I didn't have the opportunity to sprout it this go
'round, but I know it will do well for me next season.
I'll be eager to see what other growers do with it and perhaps we can cross
it with a great seed from this year's stock.
