Mason Bees-

Group:

Have been reading about bees for more than two hours now and have read much
information that contradicts itself.

The article written by an entomologist says these bees bore holes in wood,
chew through most woody objects to build nests; another piece says these are
gentle, prized pollinators which are incapable of chewing and boring, only
creating mudded cells for their eggs. They hang around if there is a nectar
source for them.

I found a perfectly drilled hole in my wooden stake with the frass
everywhere! That's the sign of a boring insect! I watched the bee enter the
hole. Guilty? On the other hand, I have several cherry laurel trees in full
bloom (very sweet flowers) and this may be what drew the bees here.
Super-pollinators? Probably. Heaven knows there are plenty of citrus groves
around here as well.

I am not interested in killing anything that is beneficial, so I will not
spray until I speak to Dr. Ferrer, our local entomologist Monday.

Learning more each hour!
