Re: Mulch
Dennis,
Mulch is used in the winter time to protect your
plants or bulbs. but in the spring when your plants
grow, if they have to grow up or push there way
through mulch then it slows them down. Mulch also
keep the light from getting to the plants which if
they are
completely covered, thus they don't do well. Thus it
is good for weed control. The other purpose of mulch
is to help the soil hold the water it has. which can
be helpful during those hot summer days. so you don't
have to water more ofter or as much. but in such a
case it is just placed around the plant- not on it.
although i just had a thought... it seems it would
help to prevent the tips of the vines from getting
damaged on hot days.
Compost is a soil amendment. it can also be used as
mulch. but really all you are doing is raising your
soil level.
With Dill's AG's - we bury the vines once they have
grown some (not at the growing end) to take advantage
of the fact that at each leaf stem intersection with
the vine, a root will grow on the top and the bottom
on the vine. Thus increasing your plants root system.
If you didn't bury your vines then the bottom root
probably wouldn't grow as well and the top one
wouldn't grow at all.
hope this helps

Hello list!
I know I rarely have anything of importance to say or
ask here but today I
have a real stickler. I read no line here or somewhere
that its good to
cover the vine with mulch, against this on a local
radio stations garden
show they were saying how mulch suppressed growth. I
know this mite seem
like a dumb question to some of you but what is the
skinny on this and where
can I learn the where's and why of mulch vs.
composts??
Thanks Dennis
