Re: Mulch

Dennis
I've been using an inch of compost in my vegetable garden as mulch for years
& I think it works great. It slowly releases nutrients, weeds are slowed a little &
easier to pull, earthworms love it, it keeps the soil from baking on hot summer days,
& it keeps the soil below it moist on windy 90 deg. days with low humidity.

The only problem I've had with it is when I mulched too early in the season before
the soil has sufficiently warmed up. When applied in early spring on cool damp soil,
it CAN stunt the growth of your plants. --- Learned that the hard way!

Last year I only had enough compost to mulch about 15' of the main vines, but 2
dumptruck loads of manure from the sale barn last year should let me mulch the
hole patch. I don't think it'll be enough to beat the future Houser 1500, but it should
get me closer!
