If you live in MN like I do, if you do not get going early....you will be
freezing in Sept...trouble this year is we have had too much snow followed by
5-6 inches of rain so nobody can get into their gardens without a boat. ;-)
If you look at the temp charts for your area....look at the average low at
night...when you see the 60 degree number that is the point you should be
planting about 60 days prior...the other advantage of going early is that if
you do have a warm sept you almost can get 2 "crops" of pumpkins ;-). (Also
June 21 is the most sunlight point)
so lots of factors  come into play.
Bottom Line: I like to get in by April 25th here in MN...heating coils, row
covers, etc are needed.  I have never had a problem "keeping" a pumpkin till
weighoff....I think it gets too cold and they are frozen solid by Oct ;-).
